ELIZA E. PEERY LOGAN

Early Life

Eliza E. Peery was born on November 10, 1847, in Daviess County, Missouri. She was one of eleven children born to Hiram Wilson Peery and Maria Louise Compton Peery. At the age of 16, she traveled west with her family along the Oregon Trail. The Peerys initially settled in the Scio area of Oregon before eventually relocating to the small community of Webfoot.

Marriage and Family

On June 21, 1867, Eliza married Andrew Russell Logan, a blacksmith and farmer. The couple began their life together in Scio, where their first two sons were born. In 1874, the Logans purchased property in the city of Dayton from the town’s founder, Joel Palmer, where they welcomed their third and final son.

Tragically, their middle son died in 1876 at the age of five. He is buried at the Odell Pioneer Cemetery.

Community Involvement

Eliza was an active and visible member of the Dayton community. In 1894, she was appointed a founding officer of the newly organized Dayton chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star — a Masonic-affiliated organization that admitted both men and women and emphasized charity, service, and moral values.

She was also a member of the Ladies’ Aid Society of the United Evangelical Church, further reflecting her strong civic and religious involvement.

Later Years and Business Endeavors

Eliza and Andrew divorced in 1890. While the court filing for their divorce has been located, it has not yet been received. Once available, it may shed light on the reasons for the separation, as divorce was still relatively uncommon at the time.

In 1894, Eliza purchased two city lots in Dayton from her parents. These were located on Alder Street between 3rd and 4th Streets. Two years later, in 1896, she opened a boarding house on the property. Her boarding house became a lively social hub; local newspapers mention various luncheons and gatherings hosted there. She managed the business until her death in 1898.

Death and Legacy

According to the Dayton Herald, Eliza underwent a “very serious operation” on February 15, 1898. She died nine days later, at the age of 50. Her death certificate has not yet been located, so the official cause of death remains unknown.

Eliza is buried in the Odell Pioneer Cemetery alongside her parents, her ex-husband Andrew, two of her children, and several other family members. Her headstone, once described as the most prominent in the cemetery, was stolen sometime before June 1996 and has not been recovered.
