Maria Louise Compton Peery was born in Virginia on March 10, 1824. At the age of 20, Maria married Hiram W. Peery (II) in Daviess County, Missouri. The couple had 11 children.

In 1863, Hiram and Maria crossed the plains to Oregon. The lived for a year in Oregon City before settling on a farm in Linn County. In 1871, the Peerys moved to Dayton, Oregon, where Hiram and Maria remained until their deaths.

Maria died in June of 1894* at the age of 70 years old, just a few months after her husband passed. Both Maria and her husband, along with several of their children and extended family, are buried in the Odell Pioneer Cemetery. Maria’s grave is unmarked.

*Some records list Maria’s death date as 1891, but obituaries for Hiram Peery confirm that she was still alive when he died in March of 1894.
